Sometimes When I come up for an idea or a theme for a mix, I get so consumed thinking about all the songs I want to include that it never ends up being more than a concept. In an effort to keep things simple, I decided to start a series of 10-song recordings. The limited tracklisting keeps me from over-thinking things and I’ve been able to come up with some really fun mixes. Since they’re all 10 tracks long, I decided to call them “Dime Pieces.”
For the fifth entry in my “Dime Piece” series, I picked 10 of my favorite slow jams and R&B cuts with a couple sampled tracks thrown in for good measure too. To download, click here.
Also, if you want a laugh, listen to me on the radio to talking about Valentine’s Day music.
1. Luther Vandross – “Take You Out”
Had to kick some things off with some Luther! Jay and Pharrell also lifted the hook.
2. The Isley Brothers – “Between the Sheets”
I love the Isley Brothers, even the ridiculous stuff Ron did with Kells. OK, especially that stuff. You likely recognize this track from the Chucky Thompson / Puff produced cut Big Poppa or this ATCQ joint or maybe even this (you know who you are).
3. Teddy Pendergrass – “Close the Door”
RIP Teddy P. Classic material right here. Might recognize it from this Big Daddy Kane cut or this one by Mary.
4.Mary J. Blige – “Love no Limit (Puff Daddy Mix)”
Speaking of Mary, I’ve had a crush on this cut since I found it one day digging. Love that Keni Burke sample! So did Rick James and Big Daddy Kane.
5. Aaliyah – “Rock the Boat”
RIP Baby Girl.
6. Dennis Edwards – “Don’t Look any Further”
Dennis was one of the Temptations, and this solo cut with Siedah Garrett was notably flipped by Rakim, Junior Mafia and 2Pac.
7. Mtume – “C.O.D. (I’ll Deliver)”
You likely know Mtume from this Biggie sample, but I got put onto this cut of theirs via a dope steppers mix by LivinProof.
8. Platinum Pied Pipers (feat. Zeno) – “Fever”
This whole PPP album was dope. If you don’t know who Waajeed is, get familiar.
9. Musiq Soulchild- “Forthenight”
This has always been one of my favorite Musiq cuts. Dude is super talented and I even got to interview him once briefly when he was coming to Alaska for a show.
10. Al Green – “Let’s Stay Together”
Had to finish it off with Al Green, my favorite soul singer.
